What the Heck Is Prepress?
Designers… Do Yourself a Favor and Learn Prepress!
Because your “Genius Design” means nothing if it prints like a hot mess.
Dear Freelance Designer,
You’re creative. You’re clever. Your WORK makes people FEEL.
But let’s have a heart-to-heart, designer to designer:
If you don’t know prepress, you’re only doing half the job.
And I say that with love, because your work deserves better.
Let’s fix it.
What the Heck Is Prepress?
Prepress is the unglamorous hero of the print world. It’s the process that takes your on-screen masterpiece and prepares it to print the way you meant it to—not the way your RGB color profile thinks it should.
It’s the difference between “Wow, this postcard looks amazing!” and “Why does my client’s logo look like it went through a blender?”
Here’s what prepress involves:
- Setting proper bleeds (0.125″ or 3mm, don’t @ me)
- Converting colors from RGB to CMYK
- Making sure your images are actually 300dpi (not scaled-up screenshots)
- Embedding or outlining fonts so nothing goes MIA
- Flattening transparencies so nothing ghosts out during printing
- Exporting the correct file format (PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4, depending)
“But I’m Just the Designer!”
Nope. You’re the Designer.
And that means knowing how your work makes it to the real world. Because when your file is late, bloated, broken, or full of mystery layers, you’re not impressing anyone—you’re burning time, budget, and trust.
Printers are not your unpaid prepress department. They will fix it if they have to—but don’t expect a thank-you note.
Want to Look Like a Pro? Be Prepress-Literate.
Clients love a designer who gets it. A designer who asks the printer for specs up front. A designer who sends clean files, properly named, with all the right settings. A designer who doesn’t have to learn what “bleed” means the hard way.
Be that designer. It’s not hard. It just takes a little learning, a bit of attention, and a willingness to go beyond the pixels.
Here’s your crash-course starter pack:
Prepress Quick Checklist:
- ✓ Bleeds added (0.125″ / 3mm on all sides)
- ✓ RGB colors converted to CMYK
- ✓ 300dpi images used at full size

- ★ BONUS: Ask your printer for specs before you design
Because Nothing Says “I Care” Like a Flawless Print Job
Prepress might not be sexy, but it is essential. Learn it, master it, and you’ll not only make your printer’s life easier—you’ll build a reputation as someone who delivers professional, print-ready design. And that, my friend, is the difference between a good freelancer and a booked-solid freelancer.
So go ahead—do yourself a favor.
Learn prepress. Your future clients (and printers) will thank you.
